Join New Renaissance Singers as we unite in song for our 26th Annual Spring Choral Concert!

This season’s program “United In Song”, arranged by our Director, Molly J. Webster, features a walk through the history of American composers from Steven Foster to the more contemporary works of Jay Althouse and Maine’s own Andrew Hirst. The theme expands to include works from outside influences such as the Beatles and Leonard Cohen, and songs of peace and unity.

Before and after the concert, there will be a silent auction of items donated by varied talents and services of our members, from a picnic basket with wine, to massage, art and handmade items, with funds raised to benefit New Renaissance Singers and our music scholarship fund. Refreshments will be provided after the concert, so feel free to hang out with us, have a snack, and bid on some great stuff!

Silver Celebration! Our Spring 2016 Choral Concert

Join us and be a part of our year-long celebration of 25 years of making music together!

For our spring concert season, we are bringing you a beautiful mix of songs of hope and joy, with music ranging from contemporary to folk and classical. Included in the spring repertoire are pieces from Beethoven, Brahm and Mozart, mixed in with a little Pete Seeger and U2, and a collection of pieces based on the works of poets like Edna St. Vincent Millay and Emily Dickinson.

We are exceptionally excited to unveil a song specially commissioned to celebrate our silver anniversary. This contemporary choral piece was created for us by UMaine alumnus Andrew Hirst. “Everyone Sang” is based on the poem by Siegfried Sassoon, written at the end of World War I.

We created our student scholarship fund to help foster and grow a love of music and singing in our community. In the last few years, we have donated scholarships to Bangor Area Children’s Choir. This year, we are offering a senior camp scholarship to the Maine Summer Youth Music at UMaine, Orono. High school students in the greater Bangor area are welcome to submit their applications.

Thank you to everyone who has generously supported NRS and our scholarship fund and made it possible for us to give back to our community. As we continue to grow, we hope to be able to offer several scholarships a year!

NRS rehearsal starting - medium

The weather outside is frightful, so why not warm yourself up with thoughts of spring – and join us as we start rehearsals for our spring concert season! Rehearsals begin Tuesday, January 20th!

We’re already excited about this season’s repertoire! Our intrepid Director Molly Webster says that it’s going to be centered around the theme of LOVE and it includes some Billy Joel! Maybe some Foreigner? And no doubt some other really awesome choral music.

New members are welcome to join us, and if you’re considering joining, but aren’t sure, you’re invited to come listen in on a rehearsal or two and see if it’s something you might like.

The songs are usually a mix of easier and more challenging pieces, and even if you’re not comfortable with your ability to read music, Molly is a great teacher and you will learn a lot, and probably surprise yourself!

NRS rehearsals startingRehearsal Season Starts for New Renaissance Singers

On Tuesday, September 9, at 6:30 pm, the New Renaissance Singers will gather at the First Congregational Church at 35 Church Street in Brewer for the first rehearsal of this season. The choral group always welcomes new members, and the first few rehearsals are open to anyone who wants to watch and listen, to see if they are interested in joining!

New Renaissance Singers (NRS) is a non-audition, four-part community chorus serving Central and Eastern Maine for the past twenty-three years. The members of NRS have varied musical backgrounds, are all ages, and perform diverse repertoire from all genres & styles. NRS is governed by a volunteer board of directors and is supported by member dues and community sponsors. NRS Board President, Tricia Griffith states, “We welcome all who share a love of singing, and believe that in uniting our voices in song we can nurture a love of music in our community and beyond.”

NRS Director Molly Webster has degrees in Music Education and Vocal Performance, and an MM in Choral Conducting. As a professional vocal instructor, Molly frequently adds insights and instruction on the art and mechanics of singing to each rehearsal. In addition, this year rehearsals will include periodic lessons on how to read music to help encourage those who love to sing, but might find the idea of reading music intimidating.

Accompanied by professional pianist Dora Rexrode, NRS stages two performances of their winter concert in early December and another set of performances for a spring concert in May. In addition to these public performances they enjoy singing in area nursing homes, as well as at area benefit concerts.

Bangor Area Children's Choir Scholarship GiftA portion of the concert proceeds will go into the new NRS Student Scholarship Fund as part of New Renaissance Singers’ mission to nurture a love of music in the community and beyond. Last year, NRS was able to donate a scholarship to the Bangor Area Children’s Choir. This year the group plans to donate scholarships at both the winter concert and the spring concert, and welcomes suggestions for future beneficiaries, especially in the area of vocal music.

If you would like to join New Renaissance Singers, sponsor their scholarship fund, or advertise in their concert programs, you can contact Director Molly Webster at (207) 992-7870, or email nrsingers@gmail.com.
